It’s important to check over your home’s fire safety system to look for potential fire catalysts. We encourage you to go through this list and perform your own home evaluations. This is also a nice activity for parents to do with their children. One of our own Spaeder employees did this checklist with one of their children who demonstrates in the video above.

Safety Systems & Practices

  • Smoke Detectors: Are batteries in current operating condition?
  • Sprinkler System (If applicable): Is the sprinkler system on? Are the sprinkler heads clear of debris?
  • Fire Extinguishers: Are fire extinguishers readily accessible?
  • CO Detector: Is a CO detector installed?
  • Safety Signs:
  • Home Muster Location: Make sure your kids know about where to meet in case of a fire and have a Fire Escape Plan.

Bathroom / Bedroom

  • Are all curling irons and steamers unplugged?
  • Is the path to the bathroom well lit?
  • Are all medications kept out of reach of children?

  • Is the stove and cooking area clear of any items that could catch on fire?
  • Are all household chemicals out of reach of children?

Home Exterior

  • The yard, stairs and doors ways are well lit?
  • Doorway areas are not cluttered by items that could become a trip hazard.
  • Gas grill stored away from the house?

Before Bedtime

  • Are all exterior doors closed and locked?
  • Are all windows either locked or open with child safety latches?
  • Is the path of egress clear of any obstructions in case of emergency?
  • Are all vehicles locked and windows rolled up?

So how did you do? Let us know in the comments!
